Change
As a musician coming into recovery 27 years ago I thought it would be impossible stay in the music industry. Everything in my world revolved around the lifestyle of drugs and music. People places and things all were rooted in this, you played with band mates, did gigs, and got high with everyone. It was part of the landscape. When I came into recovery I wasn’t allowed to play out for a year, this seemed an impossible task. When I came back in to the music industry my first session was at Electric Lady Studios, with Taylor Dane. At the end of the session the engineer pulled out a blunt and said “lets listen to the track”, I had to leave right away. A few years went by and Im playing at the 1992 MTV music awards with C&C Music factory, coming down a stairwell after sound check and Eddie Van Halen is walking up the stairs with a bottle of Jack Daniels, He says “hey have a drink with me”, I looked at him and said “I cant Eddie Im in recovery”. He said ” I understand” so we took a photo together instead and went our separates ways. There was no going back to the old life.
