Top 3 Advantages of Attending an IOP Program for Addiction Treatment
There are different forms of addiction treatment programs. These different forms of addiction treatment programs vary based on how intense they are. For example, the most intense form of addiction treatment is an inpatient treatment program. That’s because inpatient treatment programs are for individuals with severe substance addictions. There are three different outpatient addiction treatment programs. They include partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP), and standard outpatient program (OP). There are pros and cons to attending each of these forms of outpatient treatment. Here, we’re going to focus on the benefits of attending an IOP program.

What Is an IOP Program?
An IOP Program, or intensive outpatient program, is an outpatient addiction treatment program that only requires its patients to attend rehab for approximately a few hours a day, a few days a week. Because IOP programs are a form of outpatient treatment, when IOP patients aren’t receiving addiction treatment, they can go back to their homes and essentially live their normal lives.
Intensive outpatient programs are the second most intense of all the outpatient programs. Thus, IOP program patients tend to suffer from moderate-level addictions.
Top 3 Advantages of an IOP Program
There are many advantages of attending an IOP program. For example, IOP programs are affordable. IOP programs are also flexible. Furthermore, IOP programs give patients the opportunity to tend to their daily life responsibilities while receiving care.
1. It’s Affordable
One of the top advantages of attending an IOP program is the fact that IOP programs are affordable. This is especially true when you compare intensive outpatient programs to inpatient or residential treatment programs and partial hospitalization programs.
Inpatient and residential treatment programs require their patients to live in rehab facilities 24/7 while receiving care. Therefore, the cost of attending inpatient and residential treatment programs includes living expenses along with the cost of rehab. This makes inpatient and residential treatment programs quite expensive.
Although they don’t require their patients to live in rehab facilities while receiving care, partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) can also get quite expensive. This is because PHPs make their patients attend rehab for around five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week. Thus, although PHP patients aren’t spending their nights living in rehab facilities, they are essentially spending their entire days doing so.
This means that PHP patients are essentially paying for the cost of amenities at rehab facilities. This is on top of paying for addiction treatment itself. With how expensive inpatient, residential, and PHP programs are, the most affordable option of intensive addiction treatment is that of an IOP program.
2. It’s Flexible
IOP program patients are likely able to continue working or going to school while receiving treatment. This is because, although intensive, IOP programs only require their patients to attend rehab for approximately a few hours a day, a few days a week.
3. Patients Get to Practice What They Learned in Rehab in the Real World As They Learn It
Another major benefit of attending an IOP program versus an inpatient, residential, or even PHP program is that IOP programs allow their patients to spend enough time in the real world during the day to actually practice the coping skills that they’re are learning in present time. This ability is invaluable, as it allows IOP program patients to fine-tune the coping skills that work for them.
This is unlike the other intensive forms of addiction treatment that give their patients little to no time in the real world to practice their coping skills while they’re in rehab. Thus, many inpatient, residential, and PHP patients must wait until treatment is over to really practice the coping skills that they learned. Unfortunately, this makes it so that they can’t receive immediate feedback from addiction treatment and mental health professionals as to why certain coping skills aren’t working for them.
