When it comes to addiction treatment, there are different levels of care. These levels of care vary depending on how intense the patient’s addiction is and thus, how structured and intensive that patient needs his or her addiction treatment program to be. For example, individuals that suffer from severe addictions will need to receive care through inpatient or residential treatment programs.
This is because inpatient and residential treatment programs are the most structured and intense forms of addiction treatment. The next most intensive and structured form of addiction treatment after inpatient and residential treatment is partial hospitalization program (PHP) treatment.
What Is Partial Hospitalization Program Treatment?
Partial hospitalization program (PHP) treatment is a form of outpatient rehab that requires individuals to receive addiction treatment for approximately five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week. Due to the fact that partial hospitalization program treatment essentially requires its patients to attend rehab all day, another name for PHP treatment is day treatment.
Because partial hospitalization programs are outpatient treatment programs, PHP treatment patients do get to live in the comfort of their own homes in-between treatment sessions. This is different from inpatient or residential treatment patients that must live in a rehab facility 24/7 while receiving treatment.
Partial hospitalization program treatment is the most intensive form of outpatient treatment. Therefore, as mentioned earlier, it’s the most intensive and structured form of treatment following inpatient and residential treatment.
Because PHP treatment is the most intense form of outpatient treatment, individuals with moderate to severe addictions that need to attend a highly intense and structured form of treatment but can’t live in a rehab facility during the time that they are receiving treatment should attend this level of addiction treatment care.
The Benefits of Partial Hospitalization Program Treatment
There are many benefits to partial hospitalization program treatment. Some of these benefits include:
- The ability to upkeep responsibilities and live in the comfort of home while still receiving intensive addiction treatment
- Having intensive and structured forms of treatment that is less expensive than residential or inpatient treatment
- Access to medical attention and care while attending rehab
Partial Hospitalization Program Treatment vs. Standard Outpatient Treatment
Partial hospitalization program treatment differs from standard outpatient treatment because partial hospitalization program treatment is much more intense and structured. This is evident in the fact that PHP treatment requires its patients to attend rehab all day long, for five to seven days a week while standard outpatient treatment programs only require their patients to attend rehab for a couple of hours a day, one or two days a week.
One thing that partial hospitalization program treatment and standard outpatient treatment for addiction have in common is the fact that they both allow their patients to live at home while attending rehab.
Partial Hospitalization Program Treatment vs. Intensive Outpatient Program Treatment
The next intense level of care after partial hospitalization program treatment is intensive outpatient program treatment. Intensive outpatient program treatment is outpatient treatment that requires its patients to attend rehab for three to four hours a day, three to four days a week. Thus, intensive outpatient programs are less intense than PHPs, but more intense than standard outpatient program treatment.
